Liebe Angehörige der Universität,
liebe Studierende,
auch wenn für viele von uns noch ein paar Tage des Studiums und der Arbeit vor uns liegen, möchte ich den heutigen Newsletter zum Anlass nehmen, Ihnen für die kommenden freien Tage viel Ruhe und alles Gute zu wünschen und Ihnen einen Ausblick auf den Beginn des kommenden Jahres zu geben, soweit wir das jetzt schon tun können.
Wie Sie wissen, sind seit dem 16. Dezember 2021 alle Veranstaltungen mit Ausnahme von Praktika generell nur noch online möglich. Diese Regelung hatten wir eingeführt, um vor den Weihnachtstagen, für viele verbunden mit Heimreisen, eine kontaktarme Zeit zu ermöglichen. Wir haben diese Regelung nun bis zum 14. Januar 2022 fortgeführt, um mehr Zeit zwischen die vielen privaten Kontakte während der Feiertage und der dann hoffentlich wieder verstärkt stattfindenden Präsenzlehre zu bringen. Ob diese Maßnahme angesichts der Verbreitung der Omikron-Variante und der weiterhin hohen Infektions- und Hospitalisierungsraten ausreicht, welche neuen rechtlichen Rahmenbedingungen für den Universitätsbetrieb gelten und ob wir dann Präsenzlehre unter 3G, 2G oder einer anderen Regelung machen können, analysieren und entscheiden wir in der ersten Januarwoche. Wir werden Sie dann umgehend über unseren Newsletter informieren. Bitte achten Sie in der Zwischenzeit auf sich und andere.
Der Campus-Covid-Screen (CCS), mit dem wir seit Beginn des Programms bereits über 100.000 Tests abgenommen haben, ist in diesem Jahr noch bis einschließlich Dienstag, 21. Dezember 2021, nachmittags geöffnet. Im neuen Jahr geht er am Donnerstag, 6. Januar 2022, wieder an den Start. Ab sofort bieten wir zur Absicherung bestimmter Präsenzveranstaltungen in der Lehre (Praktika, Prüfungen) eigene Termine jeweils montags, dienstags und mittwochs von 8.30 bis 9.30 Uhr ausschließlich für Teilnehmende der entsprechenden Präsenzveranstaltungen an.
In der vergangenen Woche konnten wir im Rahmen der Akademischen Jahresfeier Preise verleihen. Ich möchte die Preisträger*innen auch an dieser Stelle nennen und ihnen auf das Herzlichste gratulieren, vor allem aber mich bei ihnen für ihr außerordentliches Engagement bedanken. Die Lehrpreise erhielten in diesem Jahr der Forstwissenschaftler Prof. Dr. Alexander Knohl für seine Vorlesung „Bioklimatologie“ und der Mathematiker Dr. Stefan Wiedmann für seine Übung „Analytische Geometrie und lineare Algebra I“. Der Sonderpreis der Studierendenschaft für besonderes Engagement ging an Sarah Böger und Elena Romashko für ihr Engagement rund um Antidiskriminierung. Die frühere Universitätsvizepräsidentin Prof. Dr. Doris Lemmermöhle wurde mit der Universitätsmedaille „Aureus Gottingensis“ und der frühere Universitätspräsident Prof. em. Dr. Horst Kern mit der Universitätsmedaille „In Publica Commoda“ ausgezeichnet. Darüber hinaus erhielten die Geologin Dr. Elena Shigorina und die Chemikerin Dr. Sophia Bazzi ihre Urkunden im Dorothea-Schlözer-Postdoktorandinnenprogramm. Zusätzlich möchte ich den Wissenschaftler*innen der DFG-Forschungsgruppe „Entschlüsselung eines Gehirn-Schaltkreises: Struktur, Plastizität und Verhaltensfunktion des Pilzkörpers von Drosophila“ und insbesondere ihrem Sprecher Prof. Dr. André Fiala herzlich zur Verlängerung ihrer Förderung um weitere drei Jahre gratulieren.
Eigentlich aber muss und möchte ich Ihnen allen gratulieren und danken: Auch im zweiten Jahr der Pandemie ist das, was wir gemeinsam geleistet und erreicht haben, keine Selbstverständlichkeit. Mit hohem Engagement, mit Flexibilität und Verständnis für die sich ändernden Regeln und oft nicht einfach umzusetzenden Maßnahmen haben Sie alle dazu beigetragen, dass unsere Georgia Augusta trotz oder gerade wegen der Einschränkungen durch die Pandemie auch in diesem Jahr ihre Leistungsfähigkeit unter Beweis stellen konnte. Ich freue mich und bin stolz darauf, seit April daran mitwirken zu dürfen.
Für das kommende Jahr wünsche ich mir, dass wir noch besser und auch direkter als bisher ins Gespräch kommen. Mein Kalender ist in der Woche immer recht gut gefüllt. Daher würde ich gerne am Wochenende direkt mit Ihnen das Gespräch suchen. Ich habe im Jahr 2022 an jedem Samstag ein Zeitfenster von 14 bis 15 Uhr blockiert und würde mich freuen, wenn wir hier 15-minütige Gespräche führen könnten – egal, ob Sie der Universität angehören oder nicht und um welches Thema es sich handelt, so lange es mit unserer Universität zu tun hat. Sicher gibt es viele Sachen, die Sie stören oder die Sie gut finden und die Sie schon immer einmal mit der Universitätsleitung besprechen wollten. Umgekehrt interessiert mich auch, wie Sie über die Dinge an unserer Universität denken. Meine Sicht ist leider oft dadurch etwas getrübt, dass ich doch recht weit vom Tagesgeschäft entfernt agieren muss. Unser Gespräch wird online und unter vier Augen stattfinden und damit vertraulich sein. Wenn Sie Interesse haben, wenden Sie sich bitte an mein Büro (praesident@uni-goettingen.de) und nennen Sie ein Stichwort zu dem Thema, das wir in den 15 Minuten besprechen werden. Ich würde mich sehr freuen, wenn wir so in einen direkten Dialog treten könnten.

Dear Staff, Dear Students,
Even though many of us still have a few days of studying and work ahead of us, I would like to use today’s Newsletter as an opportunity to wish you much rest and all the best for the coming break from work. I also want to give you a bit of a preview of the beginning of the coming year, as far as we are able to do so at this point.
As you know, since 16 December 2021 all events, with the exception of hands-on training, are in general only possible online. We introduced this arrangement to allow for a period of low contact before the Christmas holidays, which for many involves travelling home. We have now extended this rule until 14 January 2022 in order to allow more of a gap between the many contacts people will have outside of work during the holidays and the classroom teaching that will hopefully take place more frequently again soon. We will analyse and decide in the first week of January whether this measure is sufficient in view of the spread of the Omikron variant and the continuing high infection and hospitalisation rates. We will also consider the new legal regulations that will apply to run our University and whether we will then be able to conduct face-to-face teaching with 3G, 2G or another set of rules. Then we will inform you immediately via our Newsletter. In the meantime, please take care of yourself and others.
Our Campus Covid Screen (CCS), which we have already used to run over 100,000 tests since it began, will stay open this year until Tuesday 21 December 2021, and will resume in the New Year from Thursday 6 January 2022. We are now offering separate appointments on Mondays, Tuesdays and Wednesdays from 08:30 to 09:30 exclusively for those taking part in certain face-to-face teaching events, in order to ensure that these events (hands-on training, exams), can take place in person.
Last week, we were able to award prizes during the Annual Academic Celebration. I would like to take this opportunity to name the award winners and congratulate them most sincerely, and above all to thank them for their extraordinary dedication. This year’s teaching prizes were awarded to the forest scientist Professor Alexander Knohl for his lecture on Bioclimatology and the mathematician Dr Stefan Wiedmann for his exercise „Analytical Geometry and Linear Algebra I“. The student special prize for exceptional commitment went to Sarah Böger and Elena Romashko for their commitment to anti-discrimination. Former University Vice-President Professor Doris Lemmermöhle was awarded the University Medal „Aureus Gottingensis“, and former University President Professor Horst Kern was awarded the University Medal „In Publica Commoda“. In addition, the geologist Dr Elena Shigorina and the chemist Dr Sophia Bazzi received their certificates in the Dorothea Schlözer Postdoctoral Programme. I would also like to congratulate the scientists from the DFG Research Unit „Dissection of a Brain Circuit: Structure, Plasticity and Behavioral Function of the Drosophila mushroom body“, especially the spokesperson Professor André Fiala, on the extension of their funding for another three years.
In fact, I must, and of course would also like to, congratulate and thank you all. Even in the second year of the pandemic, the achievements and accomplishments that we have managed together cannot be taken for granted. With a high level of dedication, with flexibility and understanding for the changing rules and measures, which are often not straightforward to implement, you have all contributed to our University, the Georgia Augusta, being able to work productively again this year, despite or sometimes even because of the limitations caused by the pandemic. I am pleased and proud to have been able to contribute to this since this April.
For the coming year, I hope that we will be able to communicate even more effectively and more directly than before. My diary is always quite full during the week, which is why I would like to talk to you directly at the weekend. I have blocked a time slot from 14:00 to 15:00 every Saturday in 2022 and would be happy if we could have 15-minute conversations here – regardless of whether you belong to the University or not and regardless of the topic, as long as it concerns our University. I’m sure there are many things that bother you or that you think are good and that you’ve always wanted to discuss with the University management. Conversely, I am also interested in what you think about issues at our University. Unfortunately, my view can be affected by the fact that I have to operate at a distance from the day-to-day business. Our conversation will take place online and in private and will therefore be confidential. If you are interested, please contact my office (praesident@uni-goettingen.de) and mention the main topic we will be discussing during the 15 minutes. I would be very happy if we could talk directly in this way.
