Liebe Studierende und Beschäftigte,
liebe Angehörige der Universität,
„Denn sie wissen nicht, was wir tun …“ steht am Beginn der Webseite des Universitäts-Sekretariatsnetzwerkes. Das würde ich für die Arbeit von Sekretär*innen und Assistent*innen aus meiner langjährigen Erfahrung auf keinen Fall unterschreiben wollen! Unser Sekretariatsnetzwerk der Universität habe ich erst vor kurzem näher kennengelernt – und war und bin von Engagement und Know-how der Aktiven begeistert. Schon vorher habe ich häufiger – auch hier im Präsidium am Wilhelmsplatz – gehört, wie das Netzwerk mit Rat und Tat ausgeholfen hat an der nicht immer einfachen Schnittstelle zwischen Verwaltung und Wissenschaft. Vielen Dank für Ihren Einsatz!
Das Göttingen Campus Postdoc-Netzwerk ist ein weiteres Beispiel für Informationsaustausch und gegenseitige Unterstützung. In der kommenden Woche organisiert das Netzwerk eine „Göttingen Campus Postdoc Support and Information Fair“, von Postdocs für Postdocs entworfen. Wenn Sie Postdoc sind oder gerade promovieren, nutzen Sie die Gelegenheit, die Services der Universität für Sie und die Arbeit des Netzwerks kennenzulernen.
Viele weitere Initiativen, Netzwerke und Verbünde habe ich in meinen ersten Monaten hier in Göttingen kennen- und schätzen gelernt – und es wird zahlreiche andere geben, die ich immer noch nicht kenne. Ich lade sie alle ein, sich zum Beispiel hier im Newsletter vorzustellen.
Vor einigen Wochen bereits hatte ich die Feiern auf dem Zentralcampus erwähnt. Die Treffen im Freien sind nicht nur bei uns an der Universität, sondern überall in der Stadt größer, lebendiger und lauter geworden. Die Lage vieler dieser Treffpunkte birgt zugleich viel Konfliktpotenzial: Anwohner*innen beklagen häufig den Lärm in den Abendstunden und nachts durch laute Musik und feiernde Menschen. Bereits im vergangenen Sommer hatten wir das Campusgelände am Platz der Göttinger Sieben an Wochenenden für Feiernde bereitgestellt. Wegen Corona waren damals viele Gebäude nur wenig genutzt, aktuell finden dort aber auch an den Abenden (und) am Wochenende wieder Veranstaltungen statt, werden Büros und Bibliotheken genutzt.
Gemeinsam mit der Stadt wollen wir nun erproben, ob das Campusgelände auch in diesem Sommer als sozialer Treffpunkt genutzt werden kann. Voraussetzung ist, dass Rücksicht auf andere sowie auf die Einrichtungen der Universität genommen wird. Tolerieren werden wir unangemeldete Feiern auf dem Gelände nur sonnabends und sonntags, um Studierende und Angehörige der Universität weniger beim Lernen und Arbeiten zu stören. Ich bin mir bewusst, dass dies mit Belastungen am Campus verbunden ist. Da wir uns als Universität der Stadt und ihren Einwohner*innen sehr verbunden fühlen, möchten wir dennoch unseren Beitrag dazu leisten, stressfreie(re) Zusammenkünfte im Freien zu ermöglichen – „zum Wohle Aller“. Und dafür ist es wichtig, dass wir alle wie auch unsere Gäste auf dem Campusgelände auf ein vernünftiges und respektvolles Miteinander achten.
Müll gehört in die bereitgestellten Mülltonnen, Belästigungen anderer werden nicht toleriert, unsere Einrichtungen wie die eigens geöffneten WC-Anlagen sind pfleglich zu behandeln. Ich stimme mit der Göttinger Oberbürgermeisterin Petra Broistedt überein, dass das Angebot nur aufrechterhalten werden kann, wenn sich alle an die Regeln halten und nicht über die Stränge schlagen. Der Platz wird montags von der Universität und den Göttinger Entsorgungsbetrieben gereinigt. Ich möchte die Gelegenheit nutzen und der Stadt Göttingen für ihre Unterstützung und die hervorragende Partnerschaft danken, die uns allen in vielen Bereichen hilft.
Herzlich beglückwünschen möchte ich die Studierenden, deren Vorschläge beim Ideenwettbewerb „Studieren verändert – verändert Studieren“ prämiert wurden. Haben Sie noch Ideen für ein originelles und kreatives Projekt? Dann können Sie diese noch bis Montag für unseren Wettbewerb „Kreativität im Studium“ einreichen.
Und noch eine Beobachtung von mir zum Schluss: Ich sehe, dass die Mensa an manchen Tagen nicht voll ist. Das wundert mich, denn zu meiner Studienzeit knurrte mein Magen schon immer heftig um 11.30 Uhr. Die Mensa war allerdings nicht nur dazu da, dieses Knurren zu beheben, sondern sie ist auch ein sozialer Treffpunkt des Austauschs. Wir haben uns dort getroffen und über die kommenden Veranstaltungen gesprochen, die „Weltlage“ analysiert, Übungsaufgaben „ausgetauscht“ und uns für den Abend verabredet. Ist das heute etwa nicht mehr so?

Dear Students, dear Staff,
„Because they don’t know what we do…“ is how the webpage of the University’s Sekretariatsnetzwerk (Secretarial Network) begins. From my many years of experience, I would definitely not subscribe to that point of view as regards the work of secretaries and assistants! It is only recently that I got to know our University Sekretariatsnetzwerk better. I was, and am, enthusiastic about the commitment and know-how of those who are active in the Network. Even before that, I have often heard – for instance, here at the Presidential Board meetings at Wilhelmsplatz – how this Network has helped out in word and deed at the not always straightforward interface between administration and research. Thank you very much for your commitment!
The Göttingen Campus Postdoc Network is another example of information exchange and mutual support. Next week, the Network has its „Göttingen Campus Postdoc Support and Information Fair„, designed by postdocs for postdocs. If you are a postdoc, currently doing your PhD or involved in supporting researchers, take the opportunity to get to know the University’s services for yourself and the work of the Network.
I have got to know and appreciate many more initiatives, networks and collaborations in my first months here in Göttingen, and there will be numerous others that I am yet to discover. I invite them all to introduce themselves here in our University newsletter, for example.
A few weeks ago, I mentioned the celebrations on our Campus. The outdoor gatherings have become bigger, livelier and louder, not just at the University, but all over the City. The location of many of these meetings introduces a lot of potential for conflict: residents often complain about the noise in the evenings and at night from loud music and people celebrating. Last summer, we made the campus grounds at Platz der Göttinger Sieben available for partygoers on weekends. Because of coronavirus, many buildings were used very little at that time, but now events are taking place there again in the evenings and on weekends, while offices and libraries are being used for work.
Together with the City, we now want to test whether the Campus area can be used as a social meeting place again this summer. The prerequisite is that consideration is shown for others as well as for the University’s facilities. We will tolerate unannounced parties on the grounds only on Sundays and Saturdays, to minimise disruption to University staff and students while they are studying and working. I am aware that this entails some burden on Campus. As a University, we feel very connected to the City and its residents, but we still want to do our part to facilitate stress-free outdoor gatherings as per the University’s motto – zum Wohle Aller (for the good of all).
For this reason, it is important that all of us, as well as our guests on Campus, put some care into living together sensibly and respectfully: rubbish belongs in the bins provided; harassment of others will not be tolerated; our facilities, such as the specially opened toilet facilities, are to be treated with care. I agree with Göttingen Mayor Petra Broistedt that this can only be maintained if everyone abides by the rules and does not overdo things. The Platz der Göttinger Sieben is cleaned on Mondays by the University and the Göttingen waste disposal companies. I would like to take this opportunity to thank the City of Göttingen for its support and the excellent partnership that helps us all in many areas.
I would like to warmly congratulate the students whose proposals were awarded prizes in the ideas competition “Studying transforms you – let’s transform how you study”. Do you still have ideas for an original and creative project? There is still time to submit these until Monday for our competition „Creativity and Studies„.
And just one more observation from me in closing: I see that the canteen is not full on some days. That surprises me, because when I was a student, my stomach was always growling fiercely by 11:30. However, the Mensa is not only there to fix this growling, but it is also a social meeting place of dialogue and exchange. We used to meet there and talk about upcoming events, analyse the world situation, „exchange” study assignments and arrange to meet for the evening. I wondered if that was no longer the case today?
