Liebe Angehörige der Universität,liebe Studierende,
Ich bin froh, dass wir gemeinsam im vergangenen Jahr Maßnahmen ergriffen haben, um einen geregelten Studien- und Universitätsbetrieb auch weiter zu ermöglichen. Wir werden diese Maßnahmen wie geplant fortsetzen und dort, wo notwendig, verlängern. Für die Prüfungsphase hatten wir gemeinsam mit Studierenden und Studiendekan*innen Regeln festgelegt, die sich an der konkreten Prüfungssituation und der Entwicklung der Pandemie orientieren und bei denen wir aktuell keine Veranlassung haben, diese zu ändern: Prüfungen können in Präsenz stattfinden, wo dies möglich und nötig ist und die Raum- und Hygienebedingungen entsprechend sind, ansonsten aber auch online. Und falls Sie in Quarantäne oder Selbstisolation sein müssen, gehen wir damit genauso wie in einem Krankheitsfall um. Härtefallprüfungen erfolgen nach den üblichen Regeln in den Fakultäten. Vor allem aber darf ich Ihnen zusichern, dass Universitätsleitung, Studiendekanate und Dozent*innen stets versuchen, mit Ihnen und für Sie individuell passende Lösungen zu finden.
Um die notwendigen Veranstaltungen in Präsenz (Praktika, Exkursionen, Prüfungen) vor allem kurz vor und in der Prüfungszeit abzusichern, haben wir beim CCS die Zeiten, die für Studierende, Lehrende und Mitarbeitende im Präsenzbetrieb reserviert sind, ausgedehnt – ab sofort gibt es hierfür Termine von Montag bis Freitag von 8.30 bis 9.30 Uhr.
Ich bin mir sicher, dass wir so gut durch die aktuelle Pandemiezeit kommen, und hoffe für das Sommersemester auf deutlich mehr Präsenz. Mein Hoffen gründet sich auf den aktuellen Modellrechnungen, mit denen wir für die kommenden Monate auch planen sollten – auch wenn Zuversicht in der aktuellen Situation sicher nicht immer leicht fällt.
Herzlich bedanken möchte ich mich bei den Mitarbeitenden und Studierenden, die an den vergangenen Samstagen Gespräche mit mir gesucht und geführt haben. Für mich sind diese Gespräche ausgesprochen wichtig, denn sie eröffnen mir einen ganz anderen Weg, unsere Universität kennen zu lernen. Deswegen sollen diese „Samstaggespräche“ auch in den kommenden Monaten fortgesetzt werden. Ich habe mir weiterhin an jedem Samstag ein Zeitfenster von 14 bis 15 Uhr blockiert für 15-minütige Gespräche – egal, ob Sie der Universität angehören oder nicht und egal, um welches Thema es sich handelt, so lange es mit unserer Universität zu tun hat. Die Gespräche werden weiterhin online und unter vier Augen stattfinden und vertraulich sein. Wenn Sie Interesse haben, wenden Sie sich bitte an mein Büro (praesident@uni-goettingen.de) und nennen Sie ein Stichwort zu dem Thema, das wir in den 15 Minuten besprechen werden. Ich freue mich auf den Dialog.
Mein Vorwort kann ich in dieser Woche nicht beenden, ohne über die schrecklichen Geschehnisse am Montag in Heidelberg zu sprechen. Ich bin darüber bestürzt und traurig – und habe den Angehörigen und der Universität Heidelberg eine Beileidsbekundung im Namen unserer Universität übermittelt. In die Trauer mischt sich – wie sicherlich bei vielen von Ihnen – die Frage, ob sich so ein Ereignis nicht auch bei uns wiederholen könnte. Leider lässt sich so etwas nie völlig ausschließen. Aber unsere Universität besitzt bereits seit vielen Jahren ein umfassendes Notfallmanagement für verschiedene mögliche Szenarien, das wir ständig weiterentwickeln, auch vor dem Hintergrund der aktuellen Ereignisse. Bitte wenden Sie sich bei jeder Form von Störung oder Bedrohung an unsere Notfall- und Störmeldezentrale (Telefon 39-1171) , die rund um die Uhr besetzt ist. In jedem Hörsaal und Seminar- oder Besprechungsraum sollten Sie ein Informationsblatt mit dieser Nummer und Hinweisen finden, wie Sie sich in einer Gefahrensituation verhalten sollten.

Dear Staff, dear Students,
The number of new cases of the Omikron variant of coronavirus continues to rise every day. This is true for Germany as well as for Lower Saxony and Göttingen. And this means that the University is also in the middle of the Omikron wave, despite its online services. The high infection rates that we see everywhere are also having an impact on study and how our University runs. We can measure the drastic increase in the number of infections directly via our Campus Covid Screen (CCS): there were 67 positive cases in the previous two weeks. The numbers are far higher than in any other week since CCS began in November 2020.
I am glad that together we have taken measures over the past year to ensure regular study and University procedures can carry on. We will continue these measures as planned and extend them where necessary. For the examination phase, we had already established rules together with students and deans of studies. These rules, which we currently have no reason to change, are based on the specific exam situation and the development of the pandemic. Examinations can take place in person where this is possible and necessary and the room and conditions are appropriate; otherwise they can also take place online. In addition, if you need to be in quarantine or self-isolate, we will handle this in the same way that a case of illness would be handled. Exams that need to be held in exceptional circumstances will be carried out according to the usual rules in the faculties. Above all, however, I can assure you that the University management, deans of studies, and lecturers will always try to find suitable solutions individually both with you and for you.
In order to ensure that essential face-to-face events (hands-on training, excursions, exams) can take place, especially during the time period shortly before and during exams, we have extended the times reserved at the CCS for students, lecturers and staff who need to work face-to-face. From now on there are appointments held especially for this from Monday to Friday from 08:30 to 09:30.
I am sure that this will help us get through the current pandemic period and I hope for significantly more attendance in person in the summer semester. My hope is based on the current mathematical modelling, which we will use to plan for the next few months – even if confidence is certainly not always easy to maintain in the current situation.
I would like to thank all the staff and students who have sought out and had conversations with me over the last few Saturdays. These conversations are extremely important to me, because they open up a completely different way for me to get to know our University. That’s why these „Saturday talks“ will be continued in the coming months. I have continued to block out a timeslot from 14:00 to 15:00 every Saturday for 15-minute conversations – regardless of whether you belong to the University or not and regardless of the topic, as long as it concerns our University. Conversations will continue to take place online and in private and will be confidential. If you are interested, please contact my office (praesident@uni-goettingen.de) and mention a few key words related to the topic that we will discuss during the 15 minutes. I am looking forward to our dialogue.
I cannot end my foreword this week without mentioning the terrible events in Heidelberg on Monday. I am of course dismayed and saddened by this – and have sent a message of condolence to the University of Heidelberg on behalf of our University. Mixed in with the sadness – as I am sure is the case with many of you – is the question of whether such an event might ever happen again in our country. Unfortunately, such a thing can never be completely ruled out. But our University has had a comprehensive emergency management system, which we are constantly developing (including in the light of current events), in place for many years covering various scenarios. Please contact our twenty-four-hour emergency helpline (tel. 39-1171), in the event of any form of disruption or threat. In every lecture theatre and seminar or meeting room, you should find an information sheet with this number and instructions about what you should do in a dangerous situation.
