Liebe Studierende, liebe Mitarbeiter*innen,
seit meinem Amtsantritt als Präsident der Universität Göttingen ist ein ereignisreiches Jahr vergangen. Wie damals bereits angekündigt, werde ich nun zum 31. Dezember dieses Jahres aus dem Amt ausscheiden und mich wieder meinen wissenschaftlichen Arbeiten widmen.
Von Beginn an war mir klar, dass ich keine einfache Aufgabe vor mir hatte. Es galt, die Universität nach schwierigen Auseinandersetzungen zusammenzuführen und dafür zu sorgen, dass sie für die kommenden Jahre gut aufgestellt ist. Ich glaube sagen zu dürfen, dass wir auf diesem Wege ein gutes Stück vorangekommen sind. Insbesondere in der Pandemie, die völlig unerwartet über uns alle hereingebrochen ist, hat unsere Universität bewiesen, dass sie handlungsfähig ist.
Ich bin nach wie vor tief beeindruckt davon, wie gut die Zusammenarbeit an der Universität, am Göttingen Campus und in der Stadt Göttingen in dieser Krisenzeit funktioniert und wie schnell Ideen entwickelt und Lösungen gefunden wurden. So ist die gesamte universitäre Lehre innerhalb von nur vier Wochen auf digitale Medien umgestellt worden. Hierfür danke ich allen Mitgliedern der Universität und unseren Partnern ganz herzlich. Ich hoffe sehr, dass wir mit dem inzwischen bewährten Krisenmanagement weiter gut durch die Pandemie kommen und dass Sie, liebe Studierende, trotz der schwierigen Umstände ihre Ausbildungsziele erreichen. Dazu, so hoffe ich, wird auch unser Campus-Covid-Screen-Programm beitragen, das seit seinem Start in dieser Woche sehr gut angenommen wurde und das ab 6. Januar 2021 wieder verfügbar sein wird.
Trotz der Einschränkungen durch die Pandemie hat unsere Universität auch dieses Jahr ihre hervorragende Leistungsfähigkeit unter Beweis gestellt. So hat es viele Erfolge beim Einwerben von Drittmitteln gegeben. Zudem nehmen unsere Vorarbeiten für eine Teilnahme an der kommenden Runde der Exzellenzstrategie allmählich Fahrt auf. Im Frühjahr haben wir einen inneruniversitären Workshop mit dem Thema Governance veranstaltet und über den Sommer eine Diskussion begonnen, um strategische Perspektiven für die kommenden zehn Jahre zu entwickeln. Weniger erfreulich sind die überraschenden Kürzungen unseres Kernhaushalts durch das Land Niedersachsen, die uns zu harten Sparmaßnahmen zwingen, zumal weitere Kürzungen bereits angekündigt sind. Ein Lichtblick sind die sehr erfreulichen Förderzusagen für das Forum Wissen und für das dem Andenken des plötzlich verstorbenen Göttinger Bundestagsabgeordneten Thomas Oppermann gewidmete Kulturforum von Bund und Land. Wir freuen uns schon auf die Eröffnung des Forum Wissen Ende 2021.
Ab dem 1. Januar 2021 wird unsere hauptberufliche Vizepräsidentin für Finanzen und Personal, Dr. Valérie Schüller, als kommissarische Präsidentin die Amtsgeschäfte führen. Ich danke Frau Schüller sehr für ihr Engagement und wünsche ihr für diese Aufgabe alles Gute. Wenn alles gut geht, wird ein neuer Präsident oder eine neue Präsidentin bereits im Januar gewählt.
Ihnen allen wünsche ich schöne Feiertage, auch wenn sie für viele von Ihnen anders sein werden als sonst, besonders, wenn Sie aus dem Ausland kommen und Ihre Familien nicht besuchen können. Wir hoffen dennoch, dass Sie ein paar schöne Stunden verbringen, vielleicht mit einem Videoanruf nach Hause, bei einem virtuellen Spieleabend mit Kommiliton*innen oder bei einem Spaziergang in der Landschaft rund um Göttingen, die im winterlich-rauen Klima ihre besonderen Reize hat. Ich hoffe sehr, dass wir alle im kommenden Jahr geimpft werden können, damit sich unser Campus wieder mit richtigem Leben füllt und wir uns alle endlich wieder persönlich treffen können. Unserer Universität wünsche ich viel Erfolg unter einer neuen Leitung und dass sie ihrem Motto treu bleibt „Zum Wohle aller“!

Dear Students, dear Colleagues,
An eventful year has passed since I took office as President of the University of Göttingen. As announced at the time, I will now leave office on 31 December of this year and once more devote myself to my academic work.
From the beginning, it was clear to me that I did not have an easy task ahead of me. The task was to bring the University together following difficult disagreements and to ensure that it was well positioned for the coming years. I believe I can say that we have made good progress in this direction. Especially considering that the pandemic was suddenly and completely unexpectedly upon us, our University has proven that it is capable of reacting.
I remain deeply impressed by how well cooperation at the University, across the Göttingen Campus and in the city of Göttingen has worked during this time of crisis and how quickly ideas were developed and solutions found. For example, all University teaching was converted to digital within just four weeks. I would like to express my sincere thanks to everyone at the University and our partners for this. I sincerely hope that we will continue to get through the pandemic well with the crisis management that has proven its worth, and that our students will be able to achieve their educational goals despite the difficult circumstances. I hope that our Campus Covid Screen programme, which has been very well received since its launch this week and which will be available again from 6 January 2021, will also contribute to this.
Despite the burden of the pandemic, our University has again demonstrated outstanding performance this year. For example, there have been many successes in getting research grant funding. In addition, our preparatory work for participation in the next round of the Excellence Strategy is gradually picking up speed. In spring, we held an internal university workshop on the topic of governance, and over the summer we began a discussion to develop strategic perspectives for the coming ten years. Less welcome are the surprising cuts to our core budget by the state, which are forcing us to take tough austerity measures, especially as further cuts have already been announced. A ray of hope is the very pleasing funding pledges from the federal government and the state of Lower Saxony for the Forum Wissen and for the Kulturforum dedicated to the memory of Thomas Oppermann, who died so suddenly this year. We are already looking forward to the opening of the Forum Wissen at the end of 2021.
As of 1 January 2021, our Vice-President for Finance and Human Resources, Dr Valérie Schüller, will take over as acting President. I thank Dr Schüller very much for her commitment and wish her all the best for this task. If all goes well, a new President will be elected as early as January.
I wish you all happy holidays, even if they are going to be very different from usual for many of you, especially if you come from abroad and cannot visit your families. Nevertheless, we hope that you will be able to spend a few pleasant hours, perhaps with a video call home, an online gaming session with fellow students, or a walk in the countryside around Göttingen, which has its own special charms in our wintery, damp climate. I sincerely hope that we can all be vaccinated next year so that our campus can fill up with real life again and we can all finally meet in person once more. I wish our University much success under a new leadership and that it remains true to its motto „For the good of all“!
